Skyline Carpark
Although this site feels connected to the town it is zoned outstanding natural landscape as part of the mountain behind. A large excavation was required to make a large enough useable site for a carpark. The three shades of green used as diagonal bands on the façade help to integrate the building into its wooded setting.
"This carpark responds to a highly visible and technically challenging site with a clear and carefully considered design approach. Built as visitor infrastructure for the Gondola precinct, the building uses layered angled metal panels in different green tones to reduce its visual scale and help it sit quietly against the wooded hillside. The treatment of the long façade shows a sensitive response to the landscape and reflects kaitiakitanga (guardianship) at an infrastructure scale...
...Inside, the layout is simple and easy to navigate, with curved ramps at each end helping guide movement clearly through the building. Structural needs, including a central seismic joint, are smoothly integrated into the design. The result is durable and well-resolved visitor infrastructure that lifts a practical brief through careful detailing, material use, and landscape response."
